Improve Your Sleep – Gain Control of Your Health

When I hear young mothers complain about their babies waking them up once or twice a night I cannot help but smile. When our daughter was that age, she would wake us up 16 to 24 times a night. Her paediatrician told me something “comforting” like, “All babies cry, you know. She’ll grow out of it.” And she did … by the age of 6, when my husband had already developed chronic insomnia and I was suffering from daily fatigue. I later learned that our family’s problems were minor compared to others.

What causes those Restless Nights and Tired Days?

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, nearly 60 million Americans suffer from insomnia every year, about one-third of adults complain of problems sleeping, and nearly 10 percent have symptoms of associated daytime impairment. Women are more vulnerable to insomnia than men. Monthly menstrual- related fluctuations, and even more so, the major changes that occur during pregnancy and menopause can create serious sleep problems, that affect mood and response to stress. Insomnia is one of the most common symptoms of PMS, including difficulty falling asleep, nighttime awakening, difficulty waking up, and daytime sleepiness. Many of these same symptoms are also prevalent during pregnancy and menopause. Whether you are experiencing a disruption in your sleep patterns due to pregnancy, PMS, or menopause it is important to not let it go untreated as the condition could become chronic, or maybe a sign of a more serious thyroid disorder.

Not sleeping well? You could be losing your Health

Women face a host of other health issues when they lack proper sleep. Inadequate sleep or irregular sleep habits could lead to heart problems, weight gain, stress, and increased danger of car accidents. Sleep disorders have been linked to high blood pressure, gastrointestinal problems and cluster headaches. About four percent of Americans suffer from a serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea – regular breathing interruptions in sleep often causing extreme daytime fatigue. Sleep apnea has been associated with abnormal heart rhythm, increasing the risk of stroke and heart attack. A new study shows that undiagnosed sleep apnea may reduce women’s sexual desire and sensation, as well as negatively affect their relationship. Lack of sleep impairs performance on a wide variety of tasks; it can triple reaction time, cause memory loss, and vastly increase lapses in attention.

Despite the epidemic proportions of sleep-related problems, most Americans remain undiagnosed and untreated. It is my own un-refreshing sleep and frequent awakenings that brought me to the state-of-the-art sleep centers and into the caring hands of Dr. Alexander Golbin. I learned that he has combined the skills of a psychiatrist, sleep specialist, and sleep scientist to effectively treat children and adults for over 30 years. Dr. Golbin is also an expert in stress management, cognitive behavior therapy and hypnosis, and implements both traditional and alternative methods in treating his patients. Nearly 15 years ago he founded the Sleep and Behavior Medicine Institute (SBMI), which now has Sleep Centers throughout the Chicago-land area. All three Sleep Centers have state-of-the-art medical equipment, which allows them to assure the most accurate diagnoses of sleep and sleep-related disorders. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has also accredited two of the centers for fulfilling the highest standards for sleep centers.

Sleep like a baby Again!

Early diagnosis and treatment is crucial in any sleep pathology. If you, your child, or loved one cannot fall asleep or has fragmented sleep, becomes aware of loud snoring or irregular breathing in sleep, experiences headaches, night-time arrhythmias, chest pains or discomfort, is awakened by night terrors or terrible dreams, it is time to take action and seek professional help. Remember, most people suffering from a sleep disorder remain untreated. Dr. Golbin truly connects with patients and families and develops personalized treatment plans to provide the highest quality care. I firmly believe that if a physician of such caliber and integrity had been my daughter’s paediatrician when she was an infant, my family would have avoided many serious health consequences.
