Tests and Treatment
The following services are offered at our Sleep Center:
The following is a brief INFORMATION on TREATMENT methods used for disorders of Sleep, Alertness, Mood and Performance.
- PSG (Polysomnogram) - the continous and simultaneous recording of physiological variables during sleep (EEG, EOG, EMG - the three basic stage scoring parameters), EKG, respiratory airflow, respiratory movements, limb movements, and other electrophysiological variables.
- CPAP (Continous Positive Airway Pressure): Breathing system to help you breath during sleeptime by providing positive pressure air via a mask. The positive pressure air keeps the airway open during sleep to prevent airway collapse.
- PSG/CPAP: It is conducted when moderate or severe sleep apnea has been discovered or strongly suspected during the first part of the nights study. The second half of the night is used to determine the necessary CPAP pressure required to alleviate apnea.
- MSLT (Multiple Sleep Latency Test): A series of measurements whereby subjects are allowed a fixed number of opportunities to fall asleep during their customary wake period (usually day time). Excessive sleepiness is characterized by short latencies (the time measured between going to sleep and actual onset of sleep). Long latencies are helpful in distinguishing physical tiredness or fatigue from true sleepiness.
- MWT (Maintenance of Wakefulness Test): is designed to test the ability of a person to stay awake when all stimulation has been removed. The test is conducted by attaching the same sensors used for the MSLT test (above). The patient is then asked to sit in a comfortable lounger or sit up in bed. The lights are dimmed and the door is closed. The patient is then asked to remain awake without any stimulation for forty minutes (no reading, television, singing to yourself, wiggling your feet, etc.)
- EEG (electroencephalogram): It evaluates electrical activity produced by the brain, which can signify or rule out certain conditions, most commonly seizure disorders. The EEG takes about an hour to complete, and the results are automatically sketched on paper, while a video monitor records the movement of the patient.
- Q-EEG (Quantitative electroencephalogram): is the measurement, using digital technology, of electrical patterns at the surface of the scalp which primarily reflect cortical electrical activity or "brainwaves." Below is a normal adult male, eyes closed, showing good alpha activity at P3/P4, O1/O2, the back of the head where on should find alpha if the eyes are closed.
