A-Step


Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (A-STEP), is a technical certificate program consisting of an 80 hour course that is composed of classroom and clinical instruction.  Graduates of this program will be able to communicate and interact effectively with sleep disorder patients.  Students of this course will be trained in the physical and physiological aspects of sleep disorders, familiarity with the different sleep disorders, application of monitoring elcetrodes utilizing the 10-20 International System as well as other ancillary monitoring equipment, and utilize proper montage and protocol used during polysomnographic studies.  Upon gradutaion from this program the student will be prepared for employment in a sleep center as a Polysomnographic Trainee.    

During this course the student will have some exposure to scoring sleep records but the ability to achieve this expertise is outside the scope of this curriculm.  Future experience in the fields and additional courses can be taken to achieve this goal.  Compleation of this course does not constitute certification or credentialing in sleep medicine or polysomnographic technology.

The structure of the course is as follows:

Introductory A-Step Course: Including classroom time and advanced overnight clinical sessions: 80 hours

Total time: Approximately 2.5 months

$3500.00 (payment plan available) At the time of registration a deposit of $500.00 per student is required to hold a spot in the class.
Pre-Requisites:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Physical and mental fitness 
Note:   Students enter the profession as a trainee and advance to the level of technician once they have an overall understanding of sleep-technology skills. A technician reaches the highest level in the profession, technologist, after he or she passes the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT™) Exam, which is offered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
