Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome from A to ZZZZ
By now almost everyone has heard about Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). The definition is self-explanatory; something obstructs the upper airways. But not too many readers know about the Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome (CSAS), although CSAS is also very common and a very serious problem.
Central sleep apnea syndrome is characterized by a cessation or decrease of ventilatory effort during sleep due to central mechanisms (nervous or cardiovascular systems) and is usually, but not always, associated with oxygen desaturation.
Circadian Rhythm Disorder - Delayed Sleep-Phase Syndrome
When you or your adolescent child could not fall asleep until 3 a.m. and could not wake up before noon it is not laziness, it’s a disorder, called Delayed Sleep-Phase Syndrome.
Delayed sleep-phase syndrome is a disorder in which the major sleep episode is delayed in relation to the desired clock time, resulting in symptoms of sleep onset insomnia or difficulty in awakening at the desired time.
