Dr. Steven R. Best



Dr. Steven Best is board certified in Psychiatry, subspecialty training in Neuropsychiatry of Children and Adults, specializes in disorders of the brain which harm cognitive ability and emotional health. Trained at the University of Cincinnati. M.D. degree in 1987. His fellowship work was in Chicago –with Michael Alan Taylor M.D. – a 2 year research fellowship in Neuropsychiatry focusing on both children and adults. The fellowship training was also guided by Dragomir M. Vuckovich M.D. the Chairman of Neurology.

Dr Best specializes in disorders of the brain which harm cognitive ability and emotional health, especially in relation to developmental onset (learning disability, early onset of brain injury or disease). During the fellowship he also trained in the use of functional brain imaging (PET) in the diagnosis and prediction of response to medication with Malcolm Cooper, M.D. at the University of Chicago and in the use of psychological measures of personality to better select the specific medication appropriate to the specific pattern of depression that an individual patient exhibits. 

Dr. Best is also board Certified in Nuclear Medicine, Professor at the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago and has 30 years experience in Academic Nuclear Medicine and since 1993 has focused on Brain SPECT.

In 1996, Dr. Best spent a sabbatical year at the National Institute of Health, Laboratory of Neurosciences, in Bethesda MD, to further his expertise in brain image processing and clinical Neurosciences.

Since 1998 his interest has been focused on the applications of Brain SPECT to the evaluation of patients with complex conditions involving behavioral, emotional, personality, developmental and degenerative disorders. He started working closely with Psychiatrists and Neuropsychiatrists, toward the goal of better tailoring the treatment of child, adolescent and adult patients with coexisting Neuropsychiatric disorders. 

Dr. Best has published in the field, has also presented contributions on Brain SPECT, lectured at numerous local, national and international meetings and he is a Member of numerous professional Societies.
